Worker monitoring
Workers, such as those in nuclear power plant workers and hospitals, the radiographers are exposed to radiation.
According to UNSCEAR, about 23 million workers worldwide are monitored for exposure to ionizing radiation. Among them, 10 million are monitored for exposure to artificial sources. Radiation doses range from few mSv (natural background dose) to several Sv (accident) a year.
National regulations based on ICRP recommendations and IAEA guidance, impose the companies who employ exposed workers to provide them with legal dosimeters. Those dosimeters will be generally sourced from ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories. Those laboratories will provide them with dosimetry services known as “legal or passive dosimetry”.
Dosimeters are usually worn on the chest to monitor the whole-body dose. There are also specialist types that can be worn on the fingers, wrist, ankles, near lens of eye if those parts of the body may be potentially highly exposed.

Area dosimetry
Estimate public exposure
In addition to individual dose monitoring of classified workers, area and environmental monitoring are often imposed by country regulation.
These controls are performed in controlled areas or adjacent areas classified as public. They are also performed outdoor especially for perimeter monitoring of Nuclear facilities.
These measurements are usually carried out by an area or environmental dosimeter in H*(10).
Area monitoring is one of the instrument to ensure compliance of controlled areas and public areas adjacent to each room containing a X ray generator or a source. It allows to detect any leakage in the X-ray generator or shielding defect on the source.
It ensures that your nuclear or industrial installation, hospital or facility is safe for you, your employees and visitors.
Workstation studies
Estimate the dose received by your staff
The workstation study is part of the occupational risk assessment for the health and safety of workers.
The employer has three main duties:
- conduct a predictive assessment of collective and individual doses that workers are likely to receive during dosing operations;
- define limits for collective and individual doses for the operations concerned;
- measure and analyse the actual radiation doses received during the operations and compare them to the predicted doses.
The exposure risk analysis can be complemented by an analysis of other risks at this workstation.
The Radiation Safety Officer is generally responsible for these measurements and analysis, which he should record such as in an exposure or risk analysis sheet . He also recommends the P.P.E. (personal protective equipment) and C.P.E. (collective protective equipment) suitable to the workstation.
The exposure sheet enables the classification of the exposed workers into Class A or B.
The delimitation of controlled areas enables the selection of ambient dosimeters and individual dosimeters required and adapted to access these areas.
The workstation study is part of the ALARA policy of the company, as it allows mapping of the most dosing operations and improvement of operational protocols (implementation of personal protective equipment or collective protective equipment, reduction of exposure time, etc.)
It must be performed in realistic conditions of the workstation, i.e. in locations more likely to be occupied by workers.
